Wanda Huckabee - (1925-2012)
Wanda Huckabee passed away in her sleep at her home in Copperas Cove on Saturday, December 1st (Pearl day). She had her usual "Thursday jam" at her house just a few days before and is said to have played and sang to the very last note of the evening.
Wanda was an exceptionally good swing guitar player and singer who often came to Pearl. She was 86 years old but she was still singing and playing her heart out at the recent December Pearl. Included, below, are some photos of Wanta taken of her at that jam.
Wanda could play all the guitar bar chords and keep up with all the best swing players who came to Pearl. She often played with Wild Bill Lyle in the Pearl swing room back before Bill moved away. I remember when I first saw Wanda I was so impressed with the way she could play that guitar. She could sing wonderful harmony, too.
Wanda Virginia Huckabee was born in Coryell County in 1925, to Ralph and Emma Hamilton. She grew up and was raised on Tough Street in Flat, TX. Wanda married Edward Eugene Huckabee on May 29, 1948. They moved to Copperas Cove, TX in 1952. In 1960, they adopted their son, Scott Huckabee. After a career as a medical assistant working for Fred Barbee M.D., Wanda retired in 1986 and spent most of that time making music with her friends. She was a passionate musician and was inducted into the Coryell County Country Music Hall of Fame.
Wanda's parents, her brothers Jake Hamilton, Herman Hamilton, and sisters Lucille Faucett, and Mozell Roden preceded Ms. Huckabee in death. Wanda is survived by her son, Scott Huckabee and wife June of Kempner, TX. She had three grandsons: David Huckabee, BJ Huckabee and Zach Huckabee and 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas, with burial at Restland Cemetery in Gatesville.
